The department of paediatric surgery started functioning as a separate unit from 1995. At present there are two units headed by fulltime consultant Dr.A.Pavai & Dr.Cenita J. Sam. A full time consultant Dr.A. Pavai, who was trained at one of the premier institutions in the country heads the department. She underwent one – year fellowship in Australia where she specialized in paediatric urology and laparoscopy. Dr.Cenita J. Sam was trained in CMC Vellore and has joined the Department as Associate Professor from June 2008.
The department has a specialized theatre and a good neonatal unit. To enable smooth working we have full time paediatricians headed by Dr. John Mathai and Dr.A.M. Vijayalakshmi, specially trained nurses and paediatric anaesthetists.

All minor procedures such as hernia, hydrocele, circumcision, orchidopexy are done as day care procedures. Some of the noteworthy cases, which have been done here, are in paediatric laparoscopy, tumors, and urology. With the help of the miniature telescopes, laparoscopy is done even in newborns.
With the help of paediatric cystoscope even newborns undergo primary fulguration. Children with spina bifida and other neurologic problems suffer from bowel and bladder incontinence. They undergo specialized training programs and procedures by which they have become continent.
Vascular malformations like haemangiomas and lymphangiomas are being treated by sclerotherapy and surgery with good results.
Children with intersex abnormalities are evaluated and treated by staged procedures. Children with intussusception undergo hydrostatic reduction with guidance of ultrasound whereby surgery is avoided. Newborns with diseases such as Hirschsprung’s disease undergo one stage pull through. This is possible because of the good neonatal Intensive Care Unit. Dr. Sarah Paul heads this unit and she has a good team of doctors and nurses who are trained to look after these babies. The neonatal ICU is well equipped with warmers, monitors, infusion pumps and ventilators.
The paediatric surgical ward has a general and a special ward. Efficient , good and cost-effective care is available to paediatric surgical patients. Consultation by appointment is available.
For emergency opinion regarding reference, management and transport phone consultation is available. Online discussions and appointments are promoted.
